A bourgeois woman driving alone on a dirt road becomes distracted and accidentally runs over something. In the days following this jarring incident, she feels dazed and emotionally disconnected


from the people and events in her life as she becomes obsessed with the possibility that she may have killed someone. The police confirm that there were no accidents reported in the area and everything returns to normal until a gruesome discovery is made. Lucrecia Martel’s third feature examines the intricacies of class status and the role of women in a male-dominated society.

Lucrecia Martel, born in 1966 in Salta, Argentina, is a dominant figure in contemporary cinema and a founding member of the New Argentine Cinema of the 1990s. La mujer sin cabeza is part of her Salta trilogy which includes La ciénega (1996) and La niña santa (2004). All of these films tell the story of women at different stages of their lives dealing with love, accidents and unexplained violence. Both La ciénega and La mujer sin cabeza were selected for competition at Cannes Film Festival
