It’s 1988, and Melo, an Uruguayan town on the Brazilian border, awaits the visit of Pope John Paul II. Fifty thousand people are expected to attend, and the most humble locals believe that selling food and drink to the multitude will just about make them rich. Petty smuggler Beto thinks he has the best idea Betoof all when he decides to build a bathroom in front of his house and charge for its use. His efforts bring about unexpected consequences, and the final results will surprise everyone.

Enrique Fernández has been scriptwriter, assistant director and cameraman in many fiction and documentary shorts in Uruguay and Germany, where he worked for many years. In 1997 he was the screenwriter of Otario, a feature film directed by Diego Arsuaga, official selection in the San Sebastián Film Festival, Spain. César Charlone was born in Uruguay, but he worked primarily in Brazil after studying at the School of Cinema in São Paulo. In 2001 he was the cinematographer for Fernando Meirelles’s City of God, for which he received several awards and an Oscar nomination. In 2003 he worked with Spike Lee and once again with Meirelles on The Constant Gardener, which was nominated for Best Photography at the BAFTA Awards.
