The Night of the Moon Has Many Hours

Mauricio Arango

Colombia/USA, Surrealist Human Rights Drama, 2010
16 min, HDCAM, Color
No dialogue

A young man living in the Colombian countryside wakes up in the middle of the night. With some difficulty he gets up, dresses, and ventures outside. As he walks, nature's presence is felt in a heightened way: animal noises, trees swaying in the wind, and an impenetrable darkness overtake his path. After reaching the river's shore, he wades into the water on a raft with nothing but a long stick to row with and a single light to guide him. Beneath the moon-lit ripples he makes a startling discovery. In the eerie stillness of the night, it is hard to distinguish him from what he finds. He navigates upstream, alone and consumed by the weight of his chore. This short film has been enjoying an international festival tour along with accolades including a Jury's Choice Award at the Black Maria Film + Video Festival.

The "Gift"

Terril Calder

Canada, Animation, 2011
2 min, HD, Color
English

The "Gift" interrogates why the European settlers gave the native people blankets with diseases on them, and if they did it on purpose. This issue has been resurrected for debate in an attempt to discredit the use of smallpox blankets as a myth. The history of quite a few tribes was lost during this time because so many people fell sick and died. As a result, the woolen blanket represents all of the broken promises that are interwoven in native history. Using a very minimalist style, this animated short leaves a lasting impression. The "Gift" had its world premiere at imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival.

In 2010, the Iroquois Nationals lacrosse team faced two battles, the world championships on the field and the pursuit of self-determination in the world. The team was stranded for days in New York City while they awaited clearance from officials so they could compete in the world championships. The Haudenosaunee passports, a symbol of the nation's sovereignty, were refused by England. Canadian and American officials offered the team expedited passports, which the team declined. They chose to forfeit the championship. Determined to be recognized as a sovereign nation, this timely documentary then follows the team on their quest for the 2011 FIL medal in Prague. Peru, Music Documentary, 2011

In the urban music scene of Lima, Peru's capital city, only five percent of musicians are women. Traditionally Peruvian families do not encourage their daughters to seriously pursue music because they consider it to be unfeminine and unstable. Amidst this male-dominated musical environment, a group of professional women have come together to create an all-women percussion ensemble called Parió Paula. Por fin parió Paula reveals how these women are discovering power and creativity through percussion. As they overcome their insecurities about playing music they develop a strong community of women unlike anything they have experienced before.

Guañape Sur

János Richter

Italy/Peru, Documentary, 2010
23 min, HDCAM, Color
Spanish with English subtitles

Guañape Sur is a barren rock island off the coast of Peru. No soil, no water. Nothing grows there. Around its shores, a restricted area has been established. The island serves hundreds of thousands of sea birds as a breeding ground. A war has been fought over guano. And even during peacetime, harvesting it from the sharp rock is a brutal fight. Everything on the island is done by hand. The beautiful cinematography contrasts with its subject matter, and leaves the viewer impressed by the landscape and the workers' experiences. Guañape Sur has previously screened around the world, including at the prestigious Hot Docs and IDFA.
